Happy Fall Y'All: I Find Watercolor Scary
I am not that great at Watercolor I will admit it. It defeats me. But I keep trying. I got really ambitious on this card after watching a gorgeous watercolor video from Kristina Werner (check it out here) because she is a magical watercolor faery. I didn't know what I did wrong with the first card, but I think I figured it out while I was editing the video. Not enough water. My brush was too small and I didn't have enough water on my paper to promote the kind of water bleed that I wanted to achieve. This process taught me a few things.
First, start small. You don't have to make multiples if you're not sure how you'll like the result. I lost steam after the first 2 cards and ended up resorting to COPICs to get my spirits up, which ended up being my favorite. I wasn't crazy about coloring on watercolor paper, but that's a different issue altogether. The COPIC image is below.
Second, it's okay to fail, and find inspiration in being bold. Like my kid, featured in the video who is NOT afraid to put down ALL the water on the watercolor paper. She inspired me to keep trying. And to change the direction of this post.
Third, I really like rainbows. Working with my limited palette I was forced to experiment with how the colors blend. I think I was afraid of muddying up my colors in my first attempt, so I want to go back and see what I can do now that I've played with rainbows.
And lastly a few words of encouragement. Many of us give up after failure. It's not the giving up that is detrimental, it's the beating ourselves up. So give yourself a break and be kind to yourself. By failing, we learn. Don't let it hold you back but propel you forward and explore how you could do it differently. In the same breath though, if you just don't enjoy something, that's okay too. I like playing with watercolors and will therefore keep trying to make the succumb to my will.
